November 13, 2007 photos from the car driving from Penusila to Chennai.
Shops and markets, people, animals and other sights. Mostly on the little road from Penusila through
Rapur to Gudur (where we picked up the highway south to Chennai). Photos in Rapur and Gudur and other
towns along the way and from the open road.

This is here because it was amusing. Hope springs eternal. |

The bundle of straw leaning against the door in the photo on the left below is a typical Indian broom. Men wear dhothis or pants -- about 50% of each. In southern India, especially away from Chennai, most women wear saris. Younger women and school girls are often in salwar kameez. Even in Chennai, almost all women were in either saris or salwar kameez. Salwar are loose drawstring pants, tight at the ankles, and kameez is a long-sleeved calf-length tunic slit at the sides to the waist -- or at least to the hips. Salwar Kameez is usually worn with a long, matching scarf, worn low over the chest and draped back across both shoulders. Or worn over the head and wrapped around the neck. |

Another cool abstract due to motion of the car. |
A village -- thatched homes. Not just the roofs, the whole houses are thatched. |
|
Livestock on the road -- goats, buffalo. We also saw cows everywhere -- in cities, in towns, on country roads. Sometimes attended, usually not. |

A small temple in the country. When I mentioned the plastic litter everywhere, Deepak said to me, "Yes, many things are broken in India right now." |
Cow pulling a cart. |

In Chennai. The Tasmac wine shop and bar is the only bar I noticed while we were there -- I'm sure there were others, but they weren't jumping out at me. |
